In the Spring of 2003, via emails, radio commercials and newspaper advertising. I let it be known that I would offer space and donate equipment in my store to anyone interested in making quilts for charity to help those in need. The intitial response was overwhelming and six years later, we still have a core group of women that meet every Wednesday to work on quilts for charity. We encourage those new to quilting to join our group and learn simple techniques that we gladly teach to newcomers.
Through the years we have produced and dontated more than 500 quilts to organizations such Kelowna Hospice Society, the Tiny Tot program at the Kelowna Community Food Bank, the NOW Society, the Gospel Mission, the Kelowna Womens Shelter, the preemie ward at KGH, and the victims of the Okanagan Provincial Park fire.
We traditionally have been able to do this through the contributions of time, money and material from the members of our own quilting group, but we now find an even greater need for more quilts that exceeds the groups financial capabilities.
The labour and expertise will continue to be donated by the quilting group and the space and sewing machines by Findlay's in Orchard Plaza, but we must look to the local community to asist us with the financial requirements. We are very thankful for a recent donation from McIntosh Properties Ltd. and humbly request similar corporate donations for this very worthy cause. Any amount of donation helps tremendously and I have pledged to provide the necessary materials at my wholesale cost so that the quilting group can continue to meet its commitment to provide to those most in need of support and care, right here in Kelowna. Please help make this possible by offering your support.
Should you require more information regarding the quilting group and how donations will be utilized, please do not hestitate to contact one of the members, Brenda Sleeper, at 250-808-2248 or via e-mail at bjsleeper@gmail.com as she has volunteered for the job to raise funds.
Thank you so much for considering supporting our quilting group!
Sincerely,
Lori Findlay-Mead
